New To ZT 2 and SOOOO confused!

So I figured I'd try out ZT 2 and I can't figure out how on earth to work it. Did the tutorials and they didn't help a bit.

Where do I find the grid, so I can figure out how big an exhibit is?

How does this biome brush thing work? There are a bunch of brushes for each biome. How do I know which one to use, and how much of which? For example, for zebras, I figure I want a little bit of shallow water. Do I also want Dirt? Grass and Dirt? Grasslands?

The zoo keeper isn't any help. All he does is pull up a list of things for me to buy but doesn't give me a clue which items will actually help.

How do I know which animals want what food? For instance does the polar bear want meat or fish? How do I guess what toys they want?

TY!

Hi Lemurcat, as far as I can tell the only grids you have in building ZT2 comes with anything you place in the game, but not the grid you have in ZT1. ZT2 grids are used more to show how far the footprint of something is.

The biome brush is used to make quick changes to the terrain and foliage. If an animal is considered grassland, click the grassland biome, check the size of the brush, click either on or off the icons for rocks, plants or trees. Then run the brush over the area you are creating for the animal. It will stop at any fence you have to contain your animals. For water click on shallow or deep and again run the brush over the area you want for water. Each section of the biome brush can be tailored to the type of terrain(all grass, grass and dirt, dirt, etc) and water you want. Then you can select what you want for foliage in the exhibit.

The zookeepers suggestions are what the animal wants. It just gives you several options of playtoys, food, etc. I normally don't give the animal everything suggested, just what will keep it happy and an uncluttered exhibit.

I hope this helps.

Thanks much! Starting to get the hang of it now. LOL I finally realized that the zookeeper actually seems to be pointing to a specific part of the biome too.

A couple more questions: How do I know when I've given the critters enough trees/plants/rocks? Does the zookeeper eventually stop suggesting those? Or will that suggestion stay up there until I have cluttered every square inch with those? (Not that I can afford to on the starting scenarios.)

What's with the HUGE space requirements? I found a chart suggesting I needed a 200 sq exhibit for just 3 Thomsons Gazelles. Eeek! Can that be right? I created a 10x10 for three peafowl and the minute the first one laid an egg and it hatched, the peahen started screaming about not having enough space! What can I get away with to reasonably fit several animals into the confines of a zoo?

Is this a glitch? While doing two of the early scenarios (the troubled zoo ones) I started with recycling every tree and plant that wasn't in an exhibit. As I cleared, rather than GAINING money, my money went into the red. In the Wolverton one, I started with 5k. I immediately put the game on pause and started clearing. After I cleared all the trees, instead of being ahead, I was 1.4 MILLION in the red! What on earth? Going to restart the scenario, but wanted to check here as well.

Other weirdness: In one of the first scenarios (the first one you're allowed to choose the animals yourself) I had a peahen. After a while I noticed she was walking along the path OUTSIDE the exhibit. No warning bells and sirens that "peafowl 3 has escaped" or anything. Because I'd fouled up something else (and I'm a perfectionist LOL) I restarted the scenario from an earlier save, before I got that hen. Later, I get a message that "peafowl 3 is chasing a guest." I figured another of my evil peahens had escaped, but no, she was perfectly safe inside her exhibit so...?

Unlike in ZT1, I'm not sure there's a preferred/required amount of rocks, plants, and trees for each animal. I'm pretty sure that that listing will never go away, even if you fill up the whole exhibit with the items. Totally different that ZT1!!!

If I remember correctly, I think a lot of the plant/rock recycling we're used to in ZT1 results in having to pay money in ZT2 (I could be wrong, though).

One of the fun things about ZT2 is that animals do not need to be kept in exhibits! Even animals that require tanks can just be placed in a body of water (as long as it's deep enough).

I've had that message, too, and the animals usually are in their exhibits...not sure what's up with that.

Enjoy learning the differences between the games!
