String ID Guide

ncovert

Recommended Posts

I was exploring the string table of lang0.dll and came across some names of objects. You can use these for whatever you want, and maybe do a little hacking ;) . Items with a (??) at the end mean that I found those but was interested, such as if they were a beta object excluded or whatever. I have put the names of some of the animals in there, some misc objects, some buildings, so have fun with this.

Keep in mind that this is a work in progress, so if you have anything else to add, then message me and I'll put it in the next version. Until then, happy hacking everyone!

There are lists at other sites containing most of the things in that ID list. That is because designers need to know them when they design new things for ZT. Contrary to what the list says, many of the IDs above 64230 are not available. Some have been used in the expansion packs and some have been used by designers. The ".dll" files that came with ZT should never be changed. People have done that in the past and it caused sporadic game crashes. There is also no need. Whenever new IDs are used, they are put in site combined ".dll" files instead. One should also not use new IDs without reserving them first, otherwise they could conflict with other designers. There are ID lists elsewhere to reserve IDs and to help designers to not conflict with other designers. Finally, one needs to understand how ZT handles certain IDs, because some IDs affect other IDs.

In order to know what is truly unused you would need every ingame dll and every user made dll. That list is updated as new buildings, etc are made. It is also very true that numbers cannot be randomly used. I have seen some very strange effects from that.

No worries. I know you meant well but there is an order to using them without causing game problems. The very first creators of buildings did hack the ingame dlls and that is how we learnt of the problems that causes.

Tek used to have an id list somewhere done by Jane who created many of the buildings this site has. Even it would be out of date now because some of us including me are still creating things that use ids. We reserve the ids so others know not to use them. And I think now Jay is the only person who would know what is free since he maintains the reserve list I use.
