Bonsai, (literally "potted plant") is the art of aesthetic miniaturization of trees by growing them in containers.

Originating in China, bonsai (盆栽) is a Japanese pronunciation of the Chinese word penzai (盆栽). The word bonsai (盆栽) has been used by the West as an umbrella term for all miniature trees.

Bonsai traditions have been traced back nearly 2000 years to the Han Dynasty in China. The cultivation includes techniques for shaping, watering, and repotting in various styles of containers.
