How do I make sprites like And1 or RSN?

Hi, I have been trying to do this for a long time, I have always wanted to make animals like how and1 or rsn does it, its something I really want to know how to do, if someone can help me figure out how to do this, that would be cool,

I know this is late and I don't know if you are still wondering but RSN commonly edited details over existing sprites or warped their existing features with a paint software as for And1 I believe he takes png files of real animals crops them out of their background and shrinks them to make them sprites hope this helps.
