Putting files in the game?!?!

I have always relied on the "Find Item Locally" option on the Zoo Tycoon Main Menu, to import items into the game. I know you aren't supposed to do this because the game puts these files will nilly in the folders. You are supposed to use the dlupdate folder. Or so I thought. But if I copy a file there and open the game, it doesn't show up. Why? What am I doing wrong?

Are you being sure to unzip the files first? If you send them straight from the downloads section to the dlupdates, they will still be zipped up and the game cannot read them.

It does sound like they are dealing with the wrong file type. The following shows how to show extensions in XP. The topic also has posts on how to show extensions in Vista and what to do with various extensions.

There does not appear to be any post talking about unhiding program files. ZT files are not hidden. I believe MS Windows gives a warning when one first tries to go into the "Program Files" folder, but I believe it lets one do it. For ZT2, I believe they have a hidden folder for downloads. But I do not deal with ZT2. There might be installation instructions at DD explaining this. But probably just the above is needed.

Going from his first sentence you need to put the ztd in dlupdate, not the zip file. Also both Moondawg and ghirin have taken to putting the text screen and ztd in a folder in a zip. The problem with this is that when you extract the ztd into dlupdate it extracts the folder too. And becasue the ztd is now in a folder in dlupdate the game will not read it. So you could check to see if there are now folders in dlupdate that you did not create for storage. If so just move it out of the folder into the dlupdate folder.

When I download the files WinZip or WinRAR I can't remember which automatically unzips / extracts the files for me. And I save them in my little download library, where things are cataloged by website, and type of download. However, when I copy the file and paste it into the dlupdate folder, they do not appear in the game. However if I use the option on the main menu to find the option and allow the game to stick it wherever it will show up. I'm just confused...

And I'm using XP, not Vista. I detest Vista...

Can you see the file extensions? ie .zip, .rar, .ztd, .txt, .doc are common ones.

Well I seem to have discovered the problem. If I place a folder labeled ummm... Big Zoo and have all the downloads I used for that in the folder and I place it inside the dlupdate folder it won't pull them in game. They have to just be there. Which is okay I suppose if I make a folder separate and just copy the things from it directly into the dlupdate folder. If that makes since at all.

if you want to have folders inside dlupdate be seen by the game you have to edit your zoo.ini file.

Most of us just move them in and out of the folders as required. If the game could read inside the folder(s) and you had other files in dl update you would not know from the ingame menus what was in each of your zoos.

Also having folders that can be read by changing the ini file will not increase the number of files you can have in your game.

Well I don't feel quite as inept now. I thought I was being organized...lol Oh well I will just drag them back and forth. :)
