(Trustee)ZooGrammy Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 I'm wondering how you store your dls whether still in the zips or unzipped in folders or whatever. I am still having some issues with Winzip and how Vista indexes. I think we managed to get indexing turned off on my ZT dls folders but it still seems like it takes too long to open a zip and take out what I want etc. There is just too much going on inside like Virus checks etc.
zoobunny Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 I have Vista Ultimate on my system & I decided to use the built in Zip program instead of installing WinZip. The native zip program opens quickly for me & I can copy or paste, in or out of a file with having to extract or rezip the file. I really love that. I haven't experienced the indexing or virus check delays you have had. I keep two copies of any dl I use, one zipped, one unzipped, in main folders with the same name as the folders in your download section. (Animals, Buildings, Packs, etc.) I keep a sub folder within of files that I have combined. To combine .ztds I still use WinRAR because Genki's method is so incredibly quick & easy. :th_hapydancsmil: Also, my .ztd files default open program is WinRar, which also opens quickly. It seems like keeping an extracted copy on hand would save you a bit of time.
(Trustee)genkicoll Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 I have two folders inside my dlupdate folder: One called Updates Temp and the other Paths. I put my unzipped ztds and the screenshots that come with the ztds in this folder, making sure that the .jpg name perfectly matches the .ztd name for easy sorting. Then I keep my zipped files sorted on another drive in a folder called ZT Downloads. Inside is where I sort everything by site, type and whatever else might occur to me, such as Tek Animals, Tek Buildings, Jane, And 1, Multi-site, ZTUF, etc.
(Trustee)ZooGrammy Posted January 27, 2009 Author Posted January 27, 2009 Thanks these are both helpful responses. I have all my usermade dls on another drive too but as I said, I keep them zipped.
pukkie Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 I keep them zipped too ZooGrammy but it doesn't take long at all to unzip it so it might be as well be something in your computer settings
zoobunny Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 ZooGrammy, Vista uses the basic Explorer.exe program in your Windows folder to open .zip files. It might be worth right clicking a .zip file & selecting the 'open with' option to maneuver to the :\windows\explorer.exe file & see how fast the .zip file opens. (Don't forget to uncheck the 'Always use the selected program to open this kind of file') That might help you to know if it's the system settings or a conflict with WinZip. I have read reports that WinZip runs slow in Vista. If I remember correctly, WinZip wasn't certified to work with Vista until version 11.1.
