Help with installing custom items

I have Zoo Tycoon 2: Ultimate Collection and am having trouble installing custom items into my game. I read an article recently that said you have to have downloaded and installed official items in order to create the download folder. Unfortunately, my game already came with all those official releases. Those items are placed not in a folder labeled Downloads, but in a folder labeled DLC which then leads to a folder called zootycoon_com_zt2_1033. Once inside that folder there are .dl files and individual folders containing the items. I tried putting the new items in the zootycoon_com_zt2_1033 folder and they didn't work. Then I tried placing them in the main DLC folder and they still didn't work. Any solutions to this issue?

Try placing them in the main Zoo Tycoon 2 directory, the one that contains the download folder. Also the download need to be a z2f file.
