Sable Antelope

Was the sable antelope an original Blue Fang animal? I have not seen it as part of ZTDD's original content collection. Just general curiosity.

The Sable Antelope was never released as part of the complete collection. I guess because it was a special bonus item you got (along with the arctic zoo scenario) if you bought the game from certain chain stores.

You can find the animal at Zoo Admin:

I'm wondering if there were more animals like this planned, or other content. We're missing some langXXX-files.

From Jay: Sam's Club is a store chain that is owned by Walmart. Another similar store chain is called Costco. A person has to pay an annual membership at Sam's Club and Costco, but then they are supposedly cheaper than elsewhere, although they do not sell everything. For the food items they sell, they are basically cheaper primarily because they sell larger sizes of the things. But they also make deals with companies for other products. When ZT originally came out, they didn't get it at a cheaper price. So instead, either BF or MS made a deal with them that, although not cheaper, their ZT would include a bonus CD-ROM that would have an exclusive animal that no one else would get: the sable antelope (antelope.ztd). The bonus CD-ROM also was to include a scenario that no one else would get: the arctic zoo scenario (scn16.ztd and scn16.zoo). But there was a problem with these bonus CD-ROMs and people were having problems getting the sable antelope and scenario from the discs. So the files were loaded on a MS server, and the Sam's Club and Costco customers that talked to MS support about having the problems were given the address to these things on the MS server so that the people could download them. But most ZTers with problems usually did not talk to MS support. Usually they would ask questions about their problems at the various ZT forums. So many of these Sam's Club and Costco customers asked at the ZT forums why the sable antelope and scenario did not work. Then other Sam's Club or Costco customers, who did talk to MS support, mentioned the addresses of the downloads. Of course, that meant anyone could get them, whether or not they were a Sam's Club or Costco customer. And many did. But those downloads were meant for Sam's Club and Costco customers, and were not actually official downloads. Although the scenario came with CC, BF or MS may have intentionally not included the sable antelope in CC because of the deal they made with the stores. Since the sable antelope was not actually an official download, I don't believe that ZT sites should host it. However, people can download it from the MS server. Here is the message from MS support about the problem: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/829150 The link in that message to zootycoon no longer works. But the link to download the sable antelope from the MS server is:

Download Sable Antelope

Although scn16.ztd is also on a MS server, I do not know where scn16.zoo is on the MS server. But scn16.ztd and scn16.zoo are included in CC, so the ones on the MS server are not important. There were not other things made available to certain stores. It is possible that ".dll" and "scn" numbers were skipped because BF might have reserved those numbers just in case they made similar deals with stores in the future. But that did not happen. However, the sable antelope and arctic zoo scenario were planned ahead of time as bonus items. Their messages were not in a separate ".dll". Their messages are in lang0.dll, which came with the original ZT.

EDIT: The link to download the sable antelope has been corrected.

Interesting. I remember gleefully playing ZT1 and continually checking the MS website for additional animals, scenarios, the fancy buildings, North Africa, Atlantis, Kids Dino, and the Mexican dls that were made available over time. I wasn't that interested in the DD expansion but I was head over heels when MM came out. I was in ecstasy when I found ZTCC. --I may have bought the ZT1 at Costco. I gave it away after I bought ZTCC but don't remember where I bought CC.

I visited and registered at ZT Wildlife? over the weekend and the sable antelope seemed familiar, but like a file I had mislaid. I am on my 4th computer playing ZT and still so much to learn and try out! --Especially by the grace of talented and dedicated user-designers and adapters and rotation specialists who give their time and share their results with us ordinary--and, granted, greedy for more-- users!!!

Thank you to Fern and Jay for the background info!
