Best program for designing graphics for mods?

I've found the tutorials for coding and using APE.EX, but if I want to make my own animals, what would be the best program to make the skins/colors/animation slides? (ZT1?) Thank you!

Depends how skilled you are. Personally I'd say the way Tasmanian Tiger, Vondell and Hendrix did it. Vondell and Hendrix wrote it in more detail in some posts. Basically: if you really master a 3D program, create your animal/animations in there.

But it really requires a decent computer and more importantly: you need to have the talent and it takes a lot of knowledge. Big respect for their skillls.
 

If you're talking about converting let's say .PNG-files to ZT1, I always used Zoot back in the days and nowadays my own ZT Studio, which offers some extra options for converting .png files to ZT1 graphic files - in batch.
