I took everything out of dlupdate and put the ostriches in and had no problems. I put in one male and one female. I was able to pick each one up, able to view the zookeeper's recommendations, to look at the animal info from the zookeeper's recommentations, able to view the animal info from the animal purchase menu.

 

Only thing I can think of is you have something lurking somewhere. You could try reloading ZT and see if it still happens.
