Worth mentioning an update for the species status. Unfortunately, as a result of virulently transmitted facial cancer with a near 100% mortality rate, by the 2010s the wild population crashed completely. Only a gargantuan effort to preserve the genetic diversity of Tasmanian Devils in captive breeding programs using frozen sperm and eggs and maintaining quarantined, carefully screened colonies has stopped extinction, but the species is still at considerable risk. Without intervention, there would be 90-95% depopulation.
